Computer Chips

What is the computer chip (CPU)?

You here about computer chips all over the news and advertisements. They talked allot about the shortage of chips. There was a large chip shortage for the automotive industry not long ago. What is a chip? Chip also known as CPU or central processing unit. This is the brains of your computer. It transfer’s data from your hard drive to your ram memory card and Video card. Chips are used for many different applications. They are in your car, tv, remotes, refrigerator, alarm clocks dishwashers and many more things.

You have heard before that computers only understand 0’s and 1’s. This is called Binary Code. Also see: Binary Code. Your CPU works like Morse code, just on and off very rapidly. Where 0’s = ON AND 1’S = OFF or the other way around. Some high-end chips can do this more than a billion times a second. Then the CPU converts this code to what you see on your computer screen.

There are different types of chips, some are long term storage. Some common long-term ones are your hard drive will store any data until you delete it. Short term storage memory chips are your RAM memory or Random Access Memory; Data is down loaded from your hard drive and onto your RAM memory stick. This process is used to speed up your program loading time. When you close a program the RAM memory is erased.

A Logic chip runs programs. After the information is downloaded to the RAM memory the CPU begins putting all the data in order and sending it to the correct devices to display what you see on your computer screen.
